Universal Feed Subscription

Universal Subscription Mechanism from Randy Charles Morin. Yep, this is more like it.
Inserts an <atom:link> element into the feed pointing to the source URI. Depends on the server responding with the mime type "application/rss+xml". He suggests discouraging the use of "application/rdf+xml" - I'm not sure that is necessary (or desirable).

PS. nearly missed this - he's also done some code implementing the client side, see this blog post.

Danny, let me explain why I don't like the application/rdf+xml media type for USM. You propably think its an aversion to RSS 1.0, but the real reason is that RDF Site Summary is not the only application of RDF. What about FOAF and the other RDF applications? I don't want USM to interfere with discoverability of those applications. I hope this clears up why applicaton/rss+xml is desirable. By the way, is their a FOAF specific media type, or has any been suggested?

But the application isn't necessarily related to the media type, even if in practice they often tend to be related 1:1 (consider "mp3/easy-listening" vs. "mp3/party-hard").

The usual FOAF media type is "application/rdf+xml", because that's the (usual) medium - the standard interchange format for RDF being RDF/XML. But the media type would be different if the same FOAF data was delivered in a different RDF format, e.g. Turtle - "application/x-turtle". That could still be valid FOAF. This does mean that in a lot of cases it may be necessary to get a file and look inside to determine which application is the most appropriate. But that's the downside of having a language which allows, even encourages, mixing of different kinds of data in the same file/doc. It is still possible to give hints in other ways though - check the FOAF autodiscovery:

That makes it very difficult on native client developers. We need unique media types for everything. Too many media types can be managed, but not enough breaks my application.
